A late milk supply in a female dog after giving birth can be due to several factors.
Here are some possible reasons :
- 1. Stress or anxiety : Stress can delay the milk coming in. A calm and secure environment is essential for the female dog.
- 2. Hormonal problems: Prolactin, a key hormone in milk production, may be insufficient or unbalanced.
- 3. Health Problems : Infections or inflammation of the mammary glands can also delay lactation.
- 4. Nutrition : Inadequate nutrition can affect milk production.
- 5. Caesarean section: A cesarean section can be the cause of late milk flow.
Substitution Colostrum and/or Formula milk : it will be necessary to feed the puppies with a colostrum substitute This substitute must be administered from birth for at least the first 24 hours and ideally the first 48 hours of the puppies’ life. After 48 hours, formula milk will be the solution while waiting for the dog’s milk to come in.
If you observe a late milk flow in your female dog, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
