Late milk flow in female cats.

The milk supply in cats after giving birth can sometimes be late due to several factors.

Here are some possible explanations :

  • Hormonal Changes : When giving birth, there is a drop in progesterone and estrogen levels. Prolactin, a key hormone in milk production, may be insufficient or unbalanced.
  • Stress and environment : A stressful environment or disturbances can delay the milk coming in. It is important that the cat is in a calm and secure place.
  • Complications during parturition : Sometimes complications during parturition can affect milk production. It is crucial to monitor the cat and consult a veterinarian if any problems arise.
  • General health of the cat : The general health of the cat, including her diet and physical condition, can also influence the milk supply.
  • Caesarean section: A cesarean section can be the cause of late milk flow.

Substitution Colostrum and/or Formula milk : it will be necessary to feed the kittens with a colostrum substitute This substitute must be administered from birth for at least the first 24 hours and ideally the first 48 hours of the puppies’ life. After 48 hours, formula milk will be the solution while waiting for the cat’s milk to come in.

If you notice a late milk supply in your cat, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian to ensure that there are no underlying complications.
